Background

Shell LiveWIRE started in 1982 in the UK and marked its 35th anniversary in 2017 and is now running in 15 countries and in 8 languages. Through Shell LiveWIRE, thousands of entrepreneurs have been able to scale up their ideas and transform them into successful businesses, helping to create jobs and stimulate local economic growth. The programme supports entrepreneurs to make a positive social impact on communities, and develop innovations shaping the future.

Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited has engaged Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago (YBTT) for 2.5 years (under former BG T&T) to provide training, mentorship, and access to funding for entrepreneurs across the country. Together, YBTT has helped launch 23 new businesses, supported 86 entrepreneurs to expand and grow and created 68 new jobs since the project’s inception.

The programme has now transitioned to the Shell LiveWIRE model and is a key component of the Company’s Social Investment (SI) Strategy in Enterprise Development and is an accelerator programme that supports growth stage start-ups in underdeveloped economic sectors. These sectors have been identified as Recycling and Waste Management, Energy Solutions and Agriculture & Agri-Processing.

This National Programme spans a 2-year period and supports business growth in line with the National Development Plan (Vision 2030) of Trinidad and Tobago. Business Growth factors are monitored and evaluated over the 2nd year of the programme and include:
1. Job Creation
2. Entry to Shell’s Supply Chain
3. Export of Product/Service

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for young entrepreneurs who:
1. Are nationals of Trinidad & Tobago between the ages of 18-35 (60% of all final applicants selected) and 36-45 (40% of all final applicants selected)
2. Have a business that has been in operation for no less than 6 months but no more than 6 years.
3. Are owners and partners of a legally registered, trading business in the identified three (3) key sectors of:
           a. Energy Solutions
           b. Recycling and Waste Management
           c. Agriculture and Food Processing
*The business may offer Digital Solutions which support the identified sectors
4. Already have a paying customer base towards which a product or service is provided
5. Embody commitment, demonstrate drive and possess a spirit of innovation
6. Exhibit growth potential towards achievement of the job creation, export of a product or service entry to Shell’s supply chain)

How will participation in the Shell LiveWIRE programme benefit me?

As part of our programme, entrepreneurs receive:

Applying to the Programme

Does my company have to be a legally registered business in Trinidad & Tobago?

In order to be eligible for the LiveWIRE programme, your business must be a legally registered business via the Companies Registry, Registration House.

My business is a non for profit company. Can I still apply?

Only commercially trading businesses can apply to the LiveWIRE programme. We will not accept any applications from non for profit or community based organisations. Only for profit companies will be accepted into the programme.

I have a really good business idea, but have not generated any sales as yet in my business, can I still apply to the programme?

To be eligible for the programme, your registered business must already have a paying customer base towards which a product or service is provided. Applications from pre-revenue stage, registered business will ONLY be accepted for businesses in the Energy Solutions sector.

I have already completed another accelerator programme; can I still apply to this one?

Persons who have participated in another accelerator programme can still apply to the LiveWIRE programme. Our selection process is designed to select for those businesses which will most benefit from the LiveWIRE programme.

Do I need to create a username and password to apply to the programme?

Are there any documents that I will need to obtain and upload?

Yes, as part of your application, you will be required to submit the following:
(i) ID card/Driver’s Permit/Passport (scanned copy)

(ii) Company Registration Certificate (scanned copy)

(iii) Financials (cash flow) for the last 6 consecutive months

(iv) YouTube link to Application video. (Video must be uploaded to YouTube and the link provided)

Selection and Evaluation

How many entrepreneurs will you be selecting?

We are looking at up to 22 final participants. We will focus however more on the quality and potential of the entrepreneurs and their businesses than the number of final participants to be accepted into the programme.

How is the selection process structured?

Applicants are invited to completed the application form. Successful applicants will be contacted to proceed to an interview. Feedback will be provided to unsuccessful applicants via email.

What is the timeline for applications?

  • March 26th, 2018 – Applications Open
  • April 30th, 2018 – Applications Close
    (DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 20TH, 2018 11:59PM)
  • May 1st – 25th, 2018 – Screening and Scoring of Applications
  • May 28th-29th, 2018 – Notification of Short listed Applicants for Interview
  • June 12th-14th – Panel interviews
  • June 15th – Notification of Successful Applicants

What if I am not selected? What if I am selected? How will I know

Applicants who were not accepted into the programme will receive an email notification advising them of their application status. Successful applicants will be notified via mobile and receive a letter of acceptance via email.
